Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, high-resolution imaging technology that has revolutionized the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the retina and optic nerve.

A cutting-edge instrument in ophthalmic diagnostics, the OCT uses light waves to capture detailed, cross-sectional, and 3D images of ocular structures. This process is often likened to an "optical ultrasound" but uses light instead of sound, allowing eye care professionals to see the individual layers of the retina in near-microscopic detail.

The OCT device provides crucial measurements of tissue thickness and morphology (structure) with axial resolution often down to ≤6 µm. This detailed, layered view is indispensable for simplifying the assessment of the posterior segment of the eye, making it an essential tool in hospitals, eye clinics, and optometry practices for early and accurate detection.

With its ability to visualize and quantify the retina, optic nerve fiber layer, and anterior segment, the OCT is a critical instrument in the diagnosis and monitoring of major vision-threatening conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy. This non-contact imaging provides a reliable foundation for determining the exact location and extent of pathology, facilitating timely and effective treatment.
